I had to be the slowest growing Christian that ever existed. I mean, I’m pretty sure it was 5 years before I ever opened my Bible outside of a church setting. Today, I am meeting many Christians that have been saved less than 2 years, and they are like mature believers. It always makes me think “they are on Miracle Grow.”… Now, this is probably the “normal” thing that should happen when you give your life to Him, it just makes me jealous considering I was on Round Up for my first few years.
There is a great picture in the Bible of what I did, and what many believers are doing today. It is found in Acts 20:7-12. A young man named Eutychus was sitting in a window during a church service that Paul was preaching. The young man was “bored.” How do I know? He was asleep while the Apostle Paul was preaching. He wasn’t excited about the Word because he was only half way in. His physical position also represented his spiritual position.
The one Facebook status that I can’t stand to read is…”bored.” If I ever see this, the first thing I do is click on their name and look at their Religious Views. 9 out of 10 times there it is…”Christian.” If you don’t claim to be a Christian, be bored all you want. However, if you are a child of the living God, this is not an option. You have a copy of the Living Word of God, the Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth, the inspired God Breathed Holy Scriptures! Go read it! And never tell me that the Bible is Boring! Read 1 Samuel 17, 2 Kings 5, Daniel 3, and Daniel 6 and then say the Bible is boring. These are just a few of my favorite stories that I read over and over. The Bible is not boring…we are. I know I said this as a teenager, but I look back at myself playing a stupid Nintendo for hours on end, and calling the Bible boring. What was wrong with me? I was like Eutychus. I wasn’t all the way in!
Eutychus sat in the window. I see one of his feet in the church, and the other dangling in the world. This is exactly what a lot of “Christians” want, and it is exactly what I wanted for years after I got saved. I wouldn’t have told you that then, but I can tell you that now. When I was around the church crowd, I was a church boy. When I was around my worldly friends and it was no longer convenient to be a church boy, I behaved just like them. I sat in the window, a very miserable place. It is so miserable that you don’t even get excited to listen to Paul, the guy who penned most of the New Testament. Eutychus was there because he felt obligated, not because he was excited. Today, I would LOVE to switch places with him. He could be “bored” on Facebook, and I could sit under Paul’s teaching! Read Paul’s conversion story in Acts 9…FAR from boring. God Himself smacks Paul off of His horse, strikes him blind, and basically lays the smack down and lets him know how it’s gonna be! It is awesome. Then, read Acts 26. This is Paul actually giving his testimony years later before the rulers and governors of the land. You want to get un-bored really quick? Go tell somebody how Jesus came into your heart! You’ll activate the demon world and be in the spiritual battle of your life!
Today, I feel so blessed, and flat out lucky to be a Christian. Out of all the people in the world, and knowing that only a “few” find the narrow road that leads to life (Matthew 7:14), I get to be one of them. I did absolutely nothing to deserve that. Plus, if I’d been God and watched me treat the greatest gift that has ever been given the way I did…I would have probably struck me dead. In fact, I did reach a point where I fell in the direction of the world and was spiritually dead…even after I got saved. However, I had the way the truth and the life inside of me. God fanned that ember into a flame at an old school Church of God. When I went back inside, I didn’t sit in the window…I sat all the way in.
God is not asking for us to be perfect (as if we could even get close), that is why Jesus came and died…to GIVE us perfection. However, He is asking us to come all the way in…or not come in at all.
